With two of their top receivers unavailable for the start of the NFL season, the 49ers looked no further than their top rival’s practice squad to start filling the void.

The 49ers signed wide receiver Chris Harper off the Seahawks’ practice squad Monday to help fill out their receiving corps while Michael Crabtree and Mario Manningham begin the season on the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list.
Harper was selected in the fourth round (123rd overall) of this year’s draft out of Kansas State by the Seahawks, but was cut Saturday. He was signed to Seattle’s practice squad, but later took the 49ers up on an offer to join their 53-man roster.
Harper made four receptions for 39 yards for the Seahawks this preseason. He also had two dropped passes, including an almost sure touchdown in last Thursday’s win over the Raiders.
The 49ers traded linebacker Cam Johnson to the Indianapolis Colts for a conditional 2014 draft pick to create an extra roster spot.
