Where do the Seahawks go next with Everson Griffen off the market?

There has been a thought regarding the Seahawks for some time now that the team is not done making moves, specifically on defense. But now, one of Seattle’s reported top targets is off the market and is not making his way to the Pacific Northwest.

Wassell’s Thoughts: How to define Seahawks’ success in 2020

That player would be multi-time Pro Bowl defensive end Everson Griffen, who signed a one-year deal with the Dallas Cowboys on Wednesday. Griffen played for Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll in college at USC and is going to playing professionally for a team that isn’t the Minnesota Vikings for the first time.

So where do the Seahawks go from here? Former NFL quarterback Jake Heaps shared his thoughts on 710 ESPN Seattle’s Tom, Jake and Stacy Thursday afternoon.

“Not thrilled, but they have to move on,” Heaps said of the news Griffen was signing with Dallas. “To me, it becomes a question of do you believe that Darrell Taylor being out a couple weeks is a problem?”

Taylor, the team’s second-round pick, had surgery on his leg earlier this year and is not expected to practice for a few weeks. He was one of four edge rushers the Seahawks added this offseason either through the draft or free agency.

“If not, they probably don’t make any moves. They probably don’t add another player unless it was Jadeveon Clowney on some crazy happenstance,”  Heaps said.

But if the Seahawks do feel like Taylor needs more time or that the team in general needs more help on the line, Heaps thinks another player that Carroll coached in college will be next on the list, though he is more concerned with another defensive position.

“Clay Matthews seems to be the guy they’re targeting next, the guy they believe will come in and be the guy after Everson Griffen,” Heaps said. “But in my mind, I still look at this defensive tackle position, guys. I am still pounding the table saying defensive tackle is still a massive need for this team, it’s a big hole and you have to fill that depth with good rotational players and good proven players, and there’s some out there.”

Two veterans that come to mind?

“I would love to see (Damon) ‘Snacks’ Harrison, Marcell Dareus,” Heaps said. “… Those are the next few guys they’ll be targeting, but I think it’s going to be Clay Matthews here soon.”
