The Mariners have hired Tigers hitting coach Lloyd McClendon to be their new manager, the team announced Tuesday

McClendon, 54, becomes the Mariners’ seventh manager since 2007. He was the only one of the five known finalists for the job with previous experience as a big-league manager, having gone 336-446 over five seasons with the Pirates.

McClendon was reportedly a finalist for the Mariners’ managerial job in 2010 when the club ultimately hired Eric Wedge, who announced just before the end of the season that he would not return in 2014.

McClendon spent the past eight seasons on the Tigers’ coaching staff, including the last seven as their hitting coach, and managed the Pirates from 2001-2005.

McClendon, a native of Gary, Ind., played various positions during his eight-year MLB career.

The others who were believed to be finalists for the Mariners’ managerial job were Dodgers third-base coach Tim Wallach, Athletics bench coach Chip Hale, Padres bench coach Rick Renteria and Joey Cora, a former Mariners infielder and long-time MLB coach.
