This week’s Mariners Insider Podcast includes a wrap-up of the news of the week, which wasn’t exactly news but perhaps nonetheless encouraging for those who are missing baseball, and conversations with three guests.
Full May schedule: Mariners Classics at 7 every night on 710
Up first, a get-to-know with utility man Tim Lopes. Lopes joined me from his home in California where he has had the fortune of being able to be one of the few Mariners to have access to a hitting facility. Lopes had a very good spring training with the bat and a lot of that was due to a ton of offseason work put in with hitting coach Tim Laker. We get into that as well as uncover a unique connection he has with the Seager family. He’s actually played with all three Seager brothers.
My conversation with Jamie Moyer follows and there’s so much to get into with the Mariners Hall of Famer and father of eight. Like many, Jamie is dealing with the new world of homeschooling and it was interesting to hear how that is being handled in the state of California. On the baseball front, he gives us little look at the 2001 postseason, talks about one of my favorite matchups in the game, him against Jim Thome, and really gets into what we are seeing today from pitchers versus what we saw from pitchers in his day. There’s no bitterness or “get off my lawn” talk from Moyer, who I have no doubt would have been all over analytics and technology had they been available at the time, rather a look at the evolution of the game which brings up the interesting question of what’s next?
Finally, retired Mariners beat writer – and now part time auto racing writer – Kirby Arnold joins me to talk a little bit about his book “Tales From the Seattle Mariners Dugout.” There are, of course, stories that are told including one of the best stories I have heard about Lou Piniella. Arnold who is currently in Arizona also gives us a look at how that state – a state that might be called on to host baseball should we have a season – is handling the COVID-19 outbreak.
The podcast ends with a preview of what is coming up this week with the Mariners Classic games on 710 ESPN Seattle.
