RENTON – The Christine Michael era – if you could call it that – came to an end over the weekend when the Seahawks traded the running back to Dallas for what was reportedly a conditional seventh-round pick. Such minimal return told you everything you need to know about how much Michael, a former second-round pick, had dropped in value after two seasons in which he made more mistakes than any real impact.
Offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell was diplomatic when asked Wednesday about whether or not the team has any regrets with Michael. His answer was nonetheless telling.
“No. I felt like we gave it a great shot, we gave it a great effort,” Bevell said. “I think coach (running backs coach) Sherman Smith did an outstanding job with him, worked with him each and every day. We articulated very clearly what we expected from him, from his position, and really from him. So I think we gave it a great effort, it just wasn’t able to work out for us.”
That’s a tactful way of saying that it wasn’t for a lack of effort or patience on the part of Seattle’s coaching staff that Michael didn’t work out. It was because of Michael himself.
