With the Mariners needing to field two teams and the Japan trip now just four days off, we should see a big round of roster cuts. The Mariners will take 30 players with them to Japan and then bring additional non-40-man roster players with them to Seattle for exhibition games against the Padres at T-Mobile Park March 25-26.
Notes
• 3B Kyle Seager underwent an MRI on his hand Saturday afternoon after injuring it on a diving play Friday night. We are still awaiting the results but hope to have more information by the end of day.
• RHP Hunter Strickland, who is expected to start the season as the closer for the Mariners, has been out of action for a few days as he deals with a tight back. He is expected to play catch Sunday and return to games in the next few days.
• CF Mallex Smith (arm) has been playing catch this week and going through hitting drills in the cages. If he checks out of his Sunday work OK, he will be allowed to take batting practice on the field on Monday.
•Roster moves made before the games against the Indians and Angels: Ryan Garton, Tyler Danish, Robinson Leyer, Matt Tenuta and Dom Thompson-Williams have been re-assigned to minor league camp. The current camp roster is at 52 with more moves expected Monday.
• The Mariners also took care of a bit of spring housekeeping, signing all 23 pre-arbitration-eligible players to new contracts.
