Wednesday night’s contest against the Edmonton Oil Kings once again ended in unfavorable fashion for the Thunderbirds, but the return of a healthy Jamal Watson provided some much-needed spark.
It was the third straight game in which Seattle has been defeated, but this time the loss came under different circumstances. The Thunderbirds never held the lead Wednesday night, unlike their previous two contests in which they blew 3-1 third period advantages. Watson and linemate Scott Eansor were both absent for the first two losses, and each likely would have made a notable difference as high-energy, defensively-focused players late in the game.
When Watson did return last night, it was a welcome sight as his injury just a week prior against Brandon looked like it might keep him out for much longer than two games. The 5-foot-11 right wing got tied up near the Brandon net and grimaced in pain as he was carried off the ice by two teammates, not once putting pressure on his left knee. He was on crutches following the contest and it appeared his recovery time might be significant.
Watson wasn’t timid in his first game back, creating a number of chances with his extraordinary speed and fearlessly battling for pucks in the corners and in front of the net. T-Birds general manager Russ Farwell commented during the first intermission that he thought Watson started a bit slower than we’re used to seeing, but he seemed to be at full speed by the end of 60 minutes.
Now Seattle awaits the return of Eansor, another high-energy spark plug whose style of play will be welcome amid a grueling road trip.
