The Thunderbirds announced Tuesday afternoon that forward Alex Delnov has been selected to join the roster of Team Russia for the Subway Super Series. Team Russia will play two games against a team made up of Canadian born WHL players Wednesday night in Vancouver and Thursday night in Victoria.
Delnov was selected by the T-Birds this summer in the CHL Import Draft and hails from Moscow. In 18 games with the T-Birds he has scored six goals and 13 points.
He will join a Russian roster that includes top players like Nail Yakupov, who was the top pick in last year’s NHL Draft. The WHL roster features names that Delnov should be familiar with including Everett’s Ryan Murray and Tri-City’s Eric Comrie. The Russian team has already split their games with the QMJHL and the OHL going 1-1 against each league.
The series is a preview, of sorts, of the World Junior Championships which means Delnov should be in the running to represent his country at that tournament.
The games Wednesday and Thursday will be televised locally on the NHL Network at 7 p.m.
