Mariners’ Felix Hernandez takes line drive off arm; X-ray negative

Feb 26, 2018, 12:53 PM | Updated: 3:32 pm

Felix Hernandez exited his first start of Mariners spring training after getting hit in the arm by a comebacker off the bat of Cubs catcher Victor Caratini in the bottom of the second inning Monday.

A precautionary X-ray of Hernandez’s right forearm was negative. He is day-to-day and will be re-evaluated Tuesday.

The ball caught Felix on the right arm. He immediately jumped off the mound and dropped into a crouch, clutching his arm right below the elbow in obvious pain. Trainer Rob Nodine and manager Scott Servais immediately ran to field with Felix getting back on his feet as Nodine quickly did tests on the arm. He was then taken off the field, through the dugout and straight into the area behind the dugout with Nodine holding his lower arm steady the entire way.

As Felix left the dugout he let out a yell of pain, and no doubt frustration.

Felix had allowed one base runner on a hit by pitch in his one inning pitched plus two batters. He ended the first inning by striking out Javier Baez and Anthony Rizzo.

Hernandez headed back from the game in Mesa, Ariz., to the Mariners’ spring training complex in Peoria to be examined by team doctors.
