DETROIT – The Mariners have placed Felix Hernandez and Mitch Haniger on the 10-day disabled list after both suffered injuries in the loss to the Tigers on Tuesday night.
In addition to the DL moves, the team also optioned pitchers Evan Marshall and Chris Heston to Triple-A Tacoma and recalled outfielder Ben Gamel, left-handed pitcher Dillon Overton, and right-handed pitchers Chase De Jong and RHP Casey Fien from the Rainiers. Fien takes the 40-man roster spot left open by Seattle designating Leonys Martin for assignment on Sunday.
Hernandez goes to the DL with right shoulder inflammation and Haniger with a right oblique strain. The severity of the two injuries has yet to be detailed.
The additional pitching moves were necessitated by the extra innings that have been thrown by the bullpen the past four days, with two of three starters going three innings or less.
Gamel, who was hitting .288/.419/.390/.809 with Tacoma will join the outfield. With Kyle Seager out of the lineup for a fourth straight game Wednesday, Gamel gets the start in right field while Taylor Motter continues to play third base.
With the moves, the 40-man roster is full.
We should have further updates on the severity of the injuries to Hernandez and Haniger later this afternoon.
