It took some time, but Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto has found another rotation arm.
The Mariners have traded outfielder Seth Smith to the Baltimore Orioles for right-handed pitcher Yovani Gallardo and cash considerations.
“Gallardo gives us the veteran presence that we have been searching for,” Dipoto said in a press release. “He has a track record of durability and success as a starting pitcher. After examining the free agent and trade market, Yovani is the best fit for our club as we move forward this offseason.”
Gallardo, who will turn 31 next month, is coming off a down year where he spent time on the DL with biceps tendinitis and posted an ERA of 5.42 in 118 innings. It was the first season since 2008 that he failed to pitch 180 or more innings.
In searching for another rotation arm, “more of a No. 3 or 4” type as Dipoto told us on the Hot Stove Show in December, the Mariners were looking for someone who could provide innings and durability, something Gallardo has been able to do in his career prior to last year.
The move sets up an interesting competition for the final spot in Seattle’s rotation between Nathan Karns and Ariel Miranda, who both provided significant innings in 2015.
The Mariners had been shopping Smith for some time as the desire has been to get youngsters Ben Gamel and Mitch Haniger significant time in the outfield. Another younger player could get an opportunity, as well, now that the Mariners have an extra spot open on the bench.
Gallardo is signed through 2017 for $11 million and there is a club option for 2018 with a $2 million buyout.
With today’s moves the 40-man roster remains at 39.
I expect to talk with both Dipoto and Gallardo shortly and should have more on the move later in the day.
