Cliff Avril’s stellar October earned him NFC defensive-player-of-the-month honors. The Seahawks’ defensive end went on a tear in October, recording 6.5 sacks and three forced fumbles over four games. He was also credited with three passes defensed.
Avril forced the fumble that safety Earl Thomas returned for a touchdown Sunday against New Orleans. He also had a sack in that game and made a tackle in the backfield to deny the Saints on a two-point try.
According to the NFL, Avril is the third Seahawk to be named defensive player of the month over the past four seasons. Cornerback Richard Sherman (2013) and linebacker Bobby Wagner (2014) are the others.
Avril has 7.5 sacks on the season, which is 3.5 shy of his career high with nine games to play. For every sack he records this season, Avril has pledged to pay for a home in the hurricane-decimated country of Haiti, where his parents are from.
