Nominees named for annual Western Sports Awards

Nominees have been announced for the 79th annual MTR Western Sports Star of the Year awards, a celebration of Washington sports to be held Jan. 22 at Benaroya Hall.
The Male Sports Star of the Year nominees are Washington football running back Bishop Sankey, Seattle Sounders defender DeAndre Yedlin, Mariners pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma, Boston Red Sox pitcher and Tacoma native Jon Lester, Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, and the Washington men’s soccer team.
Nominees for the Female Sports Star of the Year award are Seattle University women’s basketball coach Joan Bonvicini, Washington volleyball player Krista Vansant, USA Judo’s Marti Malloy of Oak Harbor, mountaineer Melissa Arnot, WSU soccer forward Micaela Castain, and recently retired Seattle Storm forward Tina Thompson.
The Sports Story of the Year will be awarded to either the Eastlake Little League team, the new Husky Stadium, the Washington volleyball team, the Washington crew team, the Seattle Seahawks’ successful run, or the Seattle University men’s and women’s soccer team.
The public can vote on the awards through 5 p.m. Jan. 15 at the event’s website.
