No. 17 Baylor women edge SMU 58-55 after losing Blackwell

WACO, Texas (AP) — Sarah Andrews scored 13 points and No. 17 Baylor held off SMU 58-55 on Tuesday night despite losing leading scorer Aijha Blackwell early in the game.

Blackwell, who scored 40 points in the first two games for the Bears (3-0), scored her only two points from the foul line with 2:21 to play in the opening quarter. She exited at the next deadball with what appeared to be a leg injury from contact on her drive to the basket when she was fouled.

After a 3-pointer and a layup by Catarina Ferreira the Bears were up 50-39 with 8:43 to play but missed their next 10 shots while SMU scored 11 straight.

SMU had several possessions to take the lead before Baylor ended an 0-for-10 drought with a well-designed inbounds play resulting in a basket from freshman Bella Fontleroy. Later, Fontleroy answered a 3-pointer by Jasmine Smith with her own 3 with 1:07 left, making it 58-53. SMU scored in the closing seconds.

Ja’Mee Asberry scored 10 points for the Bears (3-0), who shot 32% and went 7 of 25 from 3-point range. Freshman Darianna Littlepage-Buggs had a career-high 14 rebounds.

Chantae Embry scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for SMU (1-2), which lost at No. 16 Oklahoma on Friday.

It was the 39th meeting in the series but first since 1996.
