The news continues to be good for James Paxton, who was struck on the left elbow by a comebacker off the bat of Andrelton Simmons in the ninth inning of the Mariners’ 3-1 win over the Angels on Sunday afternoon.
After the game it was announced that X-rays showed no break, and on Monday there was reduction of swelling. The Mariners are hopeful that he will not have to be replaced in the rotation. The one fortunate break they got was that their one off day in the next 24 falls on Thursday, which allows the team to push Paxton’s next start back.
“We’ve got some wiggle room there,” Servais said Monday afternoon. “We don’t know which day for sure. We are very hopeful (he will make his next start). Fingers crossed.”
The rotation for the remainder of the homestand is Hisashi Iwakuma on Monday, Wade LeBlanc on Tuesday and Felix Hernandez Wednesday. Ariel Miranda will take what would have been Taijuan Walker’s start Friday, and Iwakuma, LeBlanc and Felix could come back on regular rest Saturday through Monday on the upcoming road trip. On next Tuesday, Paxton or another starter would be needed.
Notes
• Arquimedes Caminero, acquired in a waiver trade with the Pirates on Saturday, has been added to the roster and is available out of the pen tonight.
• Mike Freeman is starting at shortstop tonight as Shawn O’Malley is under the weather.
• Ketel Marte is scheduled to play nine innings tonight in Tacoma. He could be activated as soon as Tuesday.
• Before Monday’s game, a moment of silence was held for former Mariners reliever Rob Ramsay, who passed away last week. It has been a rough couple of days for the Mariners media family, as they also have lost former beat writer David Andriesen, who passed away Monday morning after a week in hospice care. In searching for an article on Ramsay and his battle with brain cancer to link to this post I found an article by Andriesen on his comeback. Both were great baseball men and great family men and will be missed dearly by all that knew them.
