Heaps: Why Seahawks fans shouldn’t be cynical about blowout win over Jets

After a complete dismantling of the winless New York Jets in Week 14, the Seahawks are 9-4 and have a lot to be happy about.

Clayton: After most complete win, Seahawks are righting earlier wrongs

But as that win came after a poor showing against the Giants and the win itself was against the team that likely will have the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, many Seahawks fans aren’t convinced that the team is back on track. Former Seahawks quarterback Jake Heaps of 710 ESPN Seattle’s Jake and Stacy says otherwise.

“I’ve seen a lot of this: ‘Well it’s the Jets’ or ‘they should have done this,'” Heaps said Monday afternoon. “When have the Seahawks ever beat an opponent the way that they should have? Please, tell me the last time. It never happens!”

All but one of the Seahawks’ wins in 2019 were by one score, and their win over the Jets was just the second time this season. Heaps said that the Seahawks winning in such fashion is an extremely positive sign despite some people’s reservations. But that doesn’t mean Heaps thinks Seattle is suddenly the team to beat in the NFL.

“Now am I sitting here saying they’re going to be the Super Bowl champs? No, they’ve got a lot more to prove,” he said. “But this is also a team coming off a really bad loss to the New York Giants, and how do you get that corrected? Well, sometimes you need some of those moments to make sure that your mindset is right heading into each and every week.”

While the win was against the hapless Jets, the Seahawks’ outright domination needs to be the talking point.

“Great teams take care of business and play to their potential rather than playing down to their opponent, because I promise you even with a win and a close win versus the Jets, we’d be having a very, very different conversation than we’re having today,” Heaps said. “I think it would have showed a lot more about this team in a negative way than anything else.”

Like many, including head coach Pete Carroll, Heaps was happy to see the team shine in all facets of the game for the first time this season.

“They finally played a complete game as a team and that is extremely important in terms of the psyche of a team,” he said. “They can build off of each other, the trust is growing between that program, and I think it gives them the perfect opportunity to go and face a Washington Football Team (this Sunday) that is feeling very, very good about themselves over the last four weeks. I’m excited about that matchup.”
