Back in 2010, when the Seahawks drafted left tackle Russell Okung and free safety Earl Thomas in the first round, both players missed the start of training camp because they still hadn’t agreed to their rookie deals by late July.
That was the final year under the league’s previous collective-bargaining agreement, and when the new one was passed the following year, it simplified rookie contracts by slotting the salaries based on draft order. That has removed most of the drama from negotiations, making the signing of the deal pretty much a formality.
That all helps explain why the Seahawks have agreed to terms with defensive tackle Jarran Reed less than a week after they drafted him.
That news came Thursday from Reed’s agency, Enter-Sports Management. Of Seattle’s 10 draft picks, Reed is the only one who is known to have agreed to his rookie deal as of Thursday.
Four years is the standard length of rookie deals for players drafted outside of the first round. Reed was the 49th overall pick. Last year’s 49th overall pick, Chiefs offensive lineman Mitch Morse, signed a four-year, $4.673 million deal. Under the slotted system, Reed’s should be worth a little more than that taking into account the increase in the salary cap.
Earlier this week, general manager John Schneider identified Reed as the Seahawks draft pick with the most upside.
