Kansas City fans trying to drown out Seattle’s world crowd noise record

Fans in Kansas City are trying to drown out Seattle’s world record for stadium crowd noise set last month by Seahawks fans.

Fans there will attempt their own record Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium when the Chiefs take on the Oakland Raiders.

Arrowhead was known for years as the NFL’s loudest stadium. One of the organizers, Ty Rowton, says they want the title back.

“We weren’t going to roll over like a dog. This is our title and we’re going to bring it on Sunday and see if we can’t challenge you for that world record,” he says.

While he praises Seattle fans for their passion, he says we have an unfair advantage because of CenturyLink Field’s closed architecture. But Kansas City has us beat with raw numbers.

“The stadium is designed to make the crowd a lot louder, but here in Kansas City, we’re going to have at least 10,000 more fans, so that’s our advantage,” he says about Arrowhead’s capacity of 76,416, the fifth-largest in the NFL.

The 12th Man broke the Guinness record for “loudest crowd roar at a sports stadium” in September when the Seahawks trounced the 49ers 29-3. The decibel level was measured at 136.6. That shattered the original record of 131.7, which was set at a Turkish soccer stadium in 2011.

“I love that you guys set the bar so high and that challenges us to raise our game to levels they’ve never been,” says Rowton.

Guinness officials will monitor the noise, just as they did in Seattle, for the world record. They will take three separate readings and go with the loudest as the official number.

The Chiefs have enjoyed a resurgence, going 5-0 to start the season. And even if their fans can top Seattle, Rowton says he doesn’t expect it to stand.

“I would bet you a hundred bucks you guys are going to be lining up to beat us again. I don’t think this will end any time soon. We’re coming after you, Seattle, so you better be ready.”
