When Seattle chose Russell Okung sixth overall in 2010 after Washington took Trent Williams at No. 4, it meant those players would forever be compared to one another as two left tackles drafted two spots apart in the same year.
Britt |
That came to mind Friday when the Seahawks chose Justin Britt at the end of the second round, beginning a mini run on offensive tackles that saw two others drafted within the next three picks.
The difference this time, though, was that Seattle’s choice didn’t seem as clear-cut as it did in 2010 when Okung was the easy pick as the best left tackle available. Britt, the 64th overall selection, wasn’t considered a consensus second-day pick. He even said he was told he might not be drafted at all.
That makes Seattle’s decision to take Britt over the other tackles that went right behind him something to file away. Keep these names in mind for future comparisons: Morgan Moses (chosen 66th by Washington) and Billy Turner (chosen one spot later by Miami).
As for Williams and Okung? Williams has made two Pro Bowls and has missed eight games, four of which were due to a violation of the league’s substance-abuse policy. Okung has one Pro Bowl on his resume and has missed 19 games due to injuries.
