SANTA CLARA, Calif. – It wouldn’t have been terribly surprising to hear the Seahawks are starting Jeremy Lane and Byron Maxwell at cornerback … in 2014.
To have those two starting on Sunday in San Francisco shows how much of a hit Seattle’s depth has taken in the secondary with Richard Sherman lost for the season to an Achilles injury and Shaquill Griffin out after suffering a concussion last Monday against Atlanta.

Lane and Maxwell are experienced in Seattle’s system, though neither was expected to be contributing. The Seahawks agreed to trade Lane to Houston on Oct. 30 only for him to fail the Texans’ physical exam and come back to the Seahawks. Maxwell was signed after the injury to Sherman earlier this month.
Griffin is one of three Seattle starters ruled out before the Seahawks even left town for Sunday’s game against the 49ers. Kam Chancellor (neck) and right guard Oday Aboushi (shoulder) are also out.
Seattle isn’t as depleted as it could have been, though. Of the nine players Seattle listed as questionable – meaning it was a 50-50 proposition of whether they’d play – only two were listed among the inactive players: DE Dion Jordan and special-teams ace D.J. Alexander.
The others will be in uniform and available: offensive tackle Duane Brown, linebacker Bobby Wagner, tight end Jimmy Graham, defensive tackle Jarran Reed, linebacker Michael Wilhoite, offensive guard Luke Joeckel. Lane had his status changed to questionable on Saturday because of concerns about his knee injury, but he is also active and expected to start opposite Maxwell.
Joeckel will be playing for the first time since undergoing knee surgery following the Seahawks’ fifth game of the season. Ethan Pocic started the last five games in his absence, and will now be a candidate to move to right guard.
Running back Mike Davis (groin) and receiver David Moore are also inactive for the Seahawks.
The inactive players for San Francisco: WR Victor Bolden, DB Adrian Colbert, LB Pita Taumoepenu, DL Aaron Lynch, OL Trent Brown, DL Leger Douzable, DL D.J. Jones.
