The Huskies were selected for the bowl after finishing the regular season 8-4 overall and 5-4 in the Pac-12 (third in the Pac-12 North) in what turned out to be their final season under coach Steve Sarkisian, who bolted to coach USC two days after the Huskies beat rival Washington State in the Apple Cup on Nov. 29.
Washington inked Boise State coach Chris Petersen to replace Sarkisian on Friday, but quarterbacks coach Marques Tuiasosopo will be the interim coach for the bowl game.
BYU, an independent, finished the regular season at 8-4. The Cougars are a run-first team, ranking 10th in the nation with 274.6 yards per game on the ground.
Sophomore quarterback Taysom Hill is the team rushing leader and second-best running quarterback in the FBS with 1,211 yards and nine touchdowns rushing. Sophomore running back Jamaal Williams is right behind with 1,202 yards and seven scores.
Hill also has 2,645 yards passing with 19 touchdowns and 13 interceptions on 54.1 percent passing.
The BYU defense is ranked 23rd in the country at 21.3 points allowed per game.
The Cougars will face a Huskies team led offensively by junior running back Bishop Sankey (third in the FBS with a UW-record 1,775 yards rushing) and senior quarterback Keith Price (2,843 yards passing, 20 touchdowns, five interceptions, 65.5 completion percentage).
The Huskies rank 14th in the FBS in rushing yards per game (243.1), 19th in points per game (38.5), 30th in passing yards per game (271.3) and 36th in points allowed per game (23.4).
The last time the Cougars and Huskies met, BYU won 23-17 in Utah in the opening game of the 2010 season.
The Fight Hunger Bowl, played at AT&T Park in San Franscisco, will be televised on ESPN at 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 27.
