The Seahawks will not exercise James Carpenter’s fifth-year option, making 2014 the final year of the left guard’s rookie contract.
The team made the announcement Friday, a day before the deadline for teams to pick up options for first-round picks from the 2011 draft.
Carpenter would have been scheduled to make more than $7 million in 2015 had his option been exercised, which made it a virtual certainty that Seattle would decline to do so.
Carpenter has struggled with conditioning and injuries since he was drafted 25th overall in 2011. He started at right tackle as a rookie before his season ended prematurely due to a torn ACL, and since moving to guard the following season he has been in and out of the starting lineup while dealing with injuries to his other knee.
