Wyman’s Football 101: Telling the story of the Seahawks’ defense this year

Dec 24, 2019, 12:05 PM

The Seahawks’ 27-13 loss to the Arizona Cardinals is about as disappointing of a defeat as you can find in recent memory for the team.

The 3 Questions: How much will Marshawn’s return impact Hawks?

It cost Seattle the NFC’s No. 1 seed that it came into the game holding onto, and it makes it that much harder for the Seahawks to finish in the conference’s top two and get the first-round playoff bye that would come with it. Not only that, but the 11-win Seahawks fell to an Arizona team that had won just four games and currently ranks in the bottom five in the league both in points allowed per game and yards allowed per game.

It wasn’t Arizona’s defense that had trouble in Week 16, though. It was Seattle’s.

For a team with an 11-4 record, the Seahawks have struggled quite a bit on defense in 2019, and Sunday’s game may have been the unit’s poorest showing of the year. Of course Seattle was short several key players due to injury, including defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, safety Quandre Diggs and cornerback Shaquill Griffin, as well as defensive tackle Al Woods, who was suspended for four games by the NFL last week.

Pete Carroll shares updates on Seahawks’ litany of injuries

In this week’s Football 101, former NFL linebacker and current Seahawks Radio Network color commentator Dave Wyman tells the story of the Seahawks’ defense as he sees it this year, then breaks down what was arguably the worst play of Sunday’s game for Seattle – an 80-yard touchdown run by Arizona running back Kenyan Drake.

The Seahawks will wrap up the regular season at home Sunday against the 12-3 San Francisco 49ers in a game that will decide the NFC West championship. Wyman will be on the call with play-by-play man Steve Raible on 710 ESPN Seattle and KIRO Radio 97.3 FM. Coverage begins with the pregame show at 2 p.m., and kickoff will follow at 5:20 p.m.
