Why was Seahawks’ final day of minicamp the best practice Brock Huard has seen from WR D.K. Metcalf?

The Seahawks wrapped up their three-day minicamp Thursday with a shorter practice and, at least according to 710 ESPN Seattle’s Brock Huard, their best showing of the week.

Clayton: An emerging No. 2 WR, a TE to watch and more Hawks takeaways

“It was their shortest, their crispest, and I want to say it was their most lively practice,” Huard said during his Blue 42 segment of Brock and Salk Friday morning.

For Seahawks fans, the best news to come out of Huard’s takeaways was his report on rookie wide receiver D.K. Metcalf. The 6-feet-4, 227-pound Metcalf stole the show on the second day of the NFL Draft — the Ole Miss standout was the star of this year’s scouting combine — and has dominated headline through most of Seattle’s offseason.

But for Huard, Metcalf’s most impressive outing yet was in Thursday’s final minicamp practice.

“I thought he made the strongest initial impression in rookie minicamp; there’s no question about it,” Huard said. “And the best thing about his two months here is that he has participated in every single practice. For a guy that was banged up, and for a guy that has low body fat, there’s usually a groin or a hamstring injury, like there was this year with C.J. Prosise yesterday, or Marquise Blair last week.

“But Metcalf has been out there and durable and available at every single practice, and yesterday was his best. That’s the best I’d seen him look. He ran a slant route — offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer talked about this in our interview — where you need to isolate a one-on-one, use that big frame, use the quickness, and leverage your strength and your body, and he did that. During work in the red zone, where you want to watch D.K. Metcalf is not only on fade routes, but when he’s in traffic and he’s around those linebackers and safeties. I need to see him leverage his frame and go out and get the ball… and D.K. Metcalf looked like a first-rounder, and that’s exactly what you want him to look like when he was drafted at the end of the second.”

The Seahawks will break for six weeks before returning for training camp at the close of July.
