Reports: Carroll and Schneider back with Seahawks, Wilson to ‘explore his options’

While a handful of teams prep for their playoff games on Sunday, reports surfaced on the two biggest storylines surrounding the Seattle Seahawks.

Bumpus: Seahawks LB Bobby Wagner has ‘earned the right to ask for premium dollar’

One of those storylines is the future of quarterback Russell Wilson and whether he wants to be part of the team going forward. He’s publicly declared that his intention is to stay in Seattle and win multiple Super Bowls with the Seahawks.

But last offseason, Wilson admitted he was upset with how often opposing defenses pressured him and said he wished he had more of a ay in the Seahawks’ personnel decisions. Later, it was reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter that while Wilson wasn’t actively seeking a trade, he’d consider waiving his no-trade clause to four teams.

With that all having happened last year and the Seahawks coming off a 7-10 season in 2021, rumors and speculation have been flying around that Wilson may try and force his way to another team.

NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport shared what he’s heard from league sources on NFL.com.

Just like last year, the Seahawks’ season crashed to a disappointing halt. Just like last year, the questions surrounding their star quarterback overshadow everything this offseason.

And just like last year, sources say Russell Wilson wants to explore his options to see what else might be out there for him.

Wilson has not demanded a trade, and it’s not clear if he will. But at the least, those close to Wilson say he wants to investigate other destinations to see if those would put him in a better position to win another championship and create the legacy he sees for himself.

At the end of the day, the Seahawks don’t have to trade Wilson, but if the team wants to explore that path, he can dictate which teams are viable trade partners because of his no-trade clause.

Meanwhile, the other storyline surrounding the Seahawks of late has been an end of year meeting between owner Jody Allen, head coach Pete Carroll and general manager John Schneider.

The three have those meetings after every season, but because of the team’s lackluster season, many were waiting to hear the results of the meeting as it pertained to Carroll’s and Schneider’s immediate futures and job security. Some reports surfaced during the week that the meeting may result in Schneider assuming full GM powers and Carroll no longer holding the title of executive vice president of football operations.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported Sunday morning on Twitter with two posts that that meeting indeed has happened, and that the team is preparing to roll into 2022 with the band back together, including Wilson.

Yes, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll and GM John Schneider met Thursday with owner Jody Allen but a well-placed source said it was usual end of season review, a look ahead and no job security talk. All systems are go with Carroll, Schneider and QB Russell Wilson, source said.

Wilson has two years left on his contract, he’s expressed desire to finish in Seattle, he has a no-trade clause but, of course, his name will be in play for everyone to discuss because that’s the new frontier, real or not.
