Groz’s 2005 Seahawks Rewind: Reaching new heights by surviving 49ers
Nov 17, 2021, 12:03 PM
With quarterback Matt Hasselbeck and head coach Mike Holmgren inducted into the Seahawks Ring of Honor in back-to-back weeks this year, we look back at their finest hour, the 2005 Super Bowl season.
It was a beautiful November afternoon in San Francisco and a special day for a 49ers legend. Super Bowl-winning quarterback Steve Young headed into the team’s Hall of Fame, and despite the Niners’ 2-8 record, they gave Seattle everything they had.
Star Seahawks running back Shaun Alexander kept rolling, scoring two more touchdowns to give him 19 on the season, and Seattle at one point in the second half led by 15 points. But perhaps inspired by Young, quarterback Ken Dorsey, making just his second start of the season, led a Niners rally. And despite playing backups at many positions, San Francisco pulled off a fourth quarter scoring drive that had them a two-point conversion away from sending the game to overtime.
All of Seattle’s collective failings over the past 20 years came into sight. Losing a game they should have won, fading as the season went on – two prime reasons why the Seahawks hadn’t won a playoff game in 20 years. But fortune smiled on Seattle this day as Dorsey’s pass to the end zone fell incomplete, and instead of questioning themselves, the Hawks walked away with a 27-25 win.

The win put Seattle on top of the NFC standings at 8-2, matching the 1984 Seahawks, the last Seattle team to win a playoff game. It was the Hawks’ sixth straight win, as well, as they rode momentum into a game that would become one of the most memorable the team has ever played for reasons they could not of imagined.
