Minutes after Travis Feeney was taken in the sixth round Saturday, he was surprisingly joined by another Washington Husky as a 2016 NFL Draft selection.
Running back Dwayne Washington, who had opted to forego his senior year in 2016 with the Huskies, was taken in the seventh round (236th overall) by the Detroit Lions.
Washington had his moments in an up-and-down career with UW, topping 100 yards in a game five times over his three years with the Huskies, including a three-game string late to end Pac-12 play in 2014, but he also struggled with inconsistent production and injuries.
He finished with a team-high 697 rushing yards in 2014, but the arrival and subsequent success of Myles Gaskin last season spelled the end for Washington as a No. 1 option in Montlake.
Likely of particular interest to the Lions is Washington’s size (6-foot-2, 226 pounds) and pass-catching abilities. Last season he had 25 receptions for 315 yards – 33 more than he had on the ground – and three touchdowns. He also has breakaway speed, something he showed with several 60-yard-plus runs and even an 81-yard touchdown reception for the Dawgs. He ran a 4.4 40-yard dash at the Huskies’ Pro Day.
In Detroit, he’ll join WSU offensive lineman Joe Dahl, who was selected in the fifth round by the Lions.
