The Seahawks have signed offensive tackle Andrew McDonald off the Panthers’ practice squad, according to a tweet from the player’s agent.
Seattle had an open roster spot after waiving wide receiver Phil Bates on Saturday. McDonald’s addition gives the Seahawks nine offensive linemen, the number they had before placing backup center Lemuel Jeanpierre on injured reserve last week.
McDonald, 26, has an interesting story. Signed by the Dolphins as an undrafted free agent in 2012, McDonald spent his rookie season on Miami’s practice squad and was later revealed to be one of the targets in the team’s bullying scandal. In May, he had surgery to remove testicular cancer, which doctors believe they caught before it had spread.
McDonald, listed at 6 feet 6 and 310 pounds, spent much of last season on Carolina’s practice squad.
