Wilson to Ware: ‘You’re not going to get this ball’
Ever wonder what happens at the bottom of an NFL dogpile?
Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson provided some first-hand insight following Seattle’s win over Denver, and the play-by-play he gave of his verbal exchange with Denver’s DeMarcus Ware was quite funny.
“Me and him were going after it. I wasn’t going to let him have it,” Wilson said, laughing as he recalled what happened. “I kept telling him, ‘You’re not going to get this ball.’ He said, ‘I’ll wait all night.’ I said, ‘I’ll wait all night, too.’ ”
This was at the start of the fourth quarter when Ware came from behind to sack Wilson just in front of the Seahawks’ goal line. Wilson saw Ware at the last second and protected the ball with two hands just in time. It still came loose, though, and the ensuing tussle for the ball lasted about half a minute after officials signaled that Wilson had it.
“We were fighting for it for a while,” Wilson said. “The ref said, ‘We gotta go, Russell’s got it.’ And (Ware) said, ‘No, I got it, I got it.’ We were going back and forth and I said, ‘DeMarcus, I’m not letting you have this.’ I just kept squeezing as hard as I could, and finally I turned and got him off me. And he’s a big dude so I was going 100 percent strength, maybe 110 percent strength. I did everything I could to make sure that he didn’t get that one.”
