Not long after offensive lineman Kristjan Sokoli’s agent Tweeted that his client was the Seahawks’ first draft pick to sign his rookie deal, a report stated that cornerback Tye Smith has become the second.
According to a Tweet from Mike Garafolo of FOX Sports, Smith’s agent said the deal is worth $2,446,252 over four years. As noted earlier, four years is the standard length of rookie deals for players drafted outside the first round.
So with Sokoli and Smith having signed their rookie contracts, it’s two down and six to go for the Seahawks and their eight-member draft class. Not that it should be all that difficult. The league’s new collective-bargaining agreement slots salaries for rookie contracts based on draft order, which has removed much of the drama from negotiations.
Seattle chose Smith in the fifth round out of Towson.
