Could we see a more fast-paced Seahawks offense in 2020?

One of the main complaints you will hear from Seahawks fans is pointed at the offense.  That complaint is that the team is prone to slow starts before turning it on in the fourth quarter by fully unleashing star quarterback Russell Wilson.

But could that soon be changing?

According to NFL Network reporter Omar Ruiz, a change in philosophy of sorts may soon be coming to Seattle’s offense based on offseason coaching changes on offense.

“They are exploring ways to run that up-tempo-style of offense more often during games without changing their identity, which is one of the reasons they created a pass game coordinator, promoting former quarterbacks coach David Canales to that spot and promoting former offensive assistant and former Seahawks and Rams quarterback Austin Davis to the quarterbacks coach spot,” he said on NFL Network this week.

Ruiz joined 710 ESPN Seattle’s Danny and Gallant on Friday and talked more about how Wilson could be playing his fourth quarter-style of football earlier in games.

“I think the Seahawks have identified that they have someone who they believe is the best quarterback in the NFL, and (are trying) to have him have even more of an impact on the game than he already does,” Ruiz said. “We know how great of command Russell has of the game throughout the entire fourth quarter, but let’s see if they can have let him have even more of an impact and that’s part of the reason why that they’ve created that pass game coordinator position for Dave Canales and they also have a run game coordinator position now too, with Brennan Carroll, Pete’s son, to see if they can make more of an impact there with that up-tempo style of play without changing their identity in that kind of run-first offense that (head coach Pete Carroll) has always been known for and will continue to believe in.”

The Seahawks had one of the best offenses in the NFL in 2019, but it wasn’t uncommon for most of their points to come in the second half. In games where the Seahawks are trailing in the fourth quarter, they often shift from a slower, run-heavy offense to a fast-paced attack with fewer huddles and more passing plays. While that sort of style could be implemented earlier in games in 2020, don’t expect a full-blown change.

“A discredit to the argument of using that more often is how effectively they use that 2-minute offense almost like a surprise attack,” Ruiz said, “and maybe if they used it more often in the game when they needed it most and it mattered the most there in those ‘crunch-time moments’ it might not catch the defense off guard and would give them a better chance to prepare.”

While it’s not a sure thing we will see more of the up-tempo offense earlier in games, Ruiz believes it’s something that will be thoroughly examined throughout the offseason.

“I think that’s something they’re exploring when maybe in years past, they might have just stuck to what they’ve known, what they’d found overwhelming success with, winning a Super Bowl, obviously, and returning to another one,” he said. “But I think the exploration of that process is something they would like to implement if it suits them and they can find that they can accomplish those goals while, like I said, running the ball as effectively as they can or as they want to is something that this offseason is about.”
