Huard: Top 2 free agents — besides Clowney — Seahawks should pursue

We’re well into the NFL free agency, and the Seahawks still have some areas worth addressing on their roster. Where should their attention be when it comes to the league’s remaining free agents?

Seahawks may have filled their No. 3 receiver role by drafting two TEs

Brock Huard addressed that topic Monday morning with 710 ESPN Seattle’s Danny and Gallant and had two that jump off the list to him – well, two after the obvious case of pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney, and even then one of the names has come up plenty this offseason.

That would be Everson Griffen, a 10-year veteran defensive end who has made four Pro Bowls in the last five years as a member of the Minnesota Vikings, including in 2019. He’s been the subject of about as much speculation when it comes to Seattle’s need for help in getting to the quarterback as anybody besides Clowney, probably tying Yannick Ngakoue, who has requested a trade out of Jacksonville. Fueling a lot of that speculation is the fact that Griffen played for Seahawks coach Pete Carroll in college at USC.

“Obviously Everson Griffen is the name I think a lot of people point to because Pete’s going to know him from the inside-out, I think know what makes him tick,” Huard said. “He was still a highly productive and volatile player for Minnesota last year.”

OK, but what about somebody who hasn’t been tied to the Seahawks much this offseason? Huard has an interesting choice there: Logan Ryan, a defensive back who has started for the Titans in each of the last three seasons and before that spent four years with New England.

“From a skill set standpoint, an experience standpoint, if you’re going to have less of an offseason, you’re going to need somebody to plug and play,” Huard said.

Ryan’s experience with the Patriots is why Huard thinks Ryan fits the bill, as Seattle isn’t set at nickel cornerback for 2020 and last saw success at the position in 2018 with Justin Coleman, who came to the Seahawks from New England.

“If we remember, the last (Seahawks) nickelback who came out of New England, where Logan cut his teeth originally, he played pretty good for the Seahawks before he got his lucrative contract in Detroit,” Huard said of Coleman, who signed a four-year, $36 million deal with the Lions ahead of the 2019 season.

Huard described Ryan as a versatile “nickelback/safety/corner” who is “position-less,” and he pointed out how Ryan has shown a knack for tallying up some stats Seattle could certainly use this season.

“How about just bringing in a guy that’s played a bunch and had 4 1/2 sacks and four picks last year like Logan Ryan did, who’s got loads of experience, who’d probably come pretty cheap.” Huard said.

Something else that might make Ryan just a little more attractive to Seahawks fans? As Danny O’Neil pointed out, he picked off the last pass Tom Brady threw as Patriots quarterback, returning it for a pick-six against his former team.
