Much ado about a number: Seahawks’ No. 90 has no bearing on Clowney

Much was made over Seahawks defensive tackle Jarran Reed’s Twitter announcement Wednesday that he would be wearing No. 90 this season. Whether that be our thirst for news or desire for clarification on Jadeveon Clowney’s potential is subjective, but it certainly lit up the internet.

Schneider: Hawks had ‘so much conviction’ taking first-round pick Brooks

Clowney, the top free agent pass rusher currently on the market, wore 90 for the Seahawks last year, so it’s easy to presume that Reed’s tweet would signal he’s not coming back. However, it may all have been much ado about a number.

Seahawks general manager John Schneider joined 710 ESPN Seattle’s Danny and Gallant on Thursday morning and provided a little clarity, at least about the number.

“Yeah, I think you’re buying into it, because I don’t remember approving that yet,” Schneider said. “I don’t know where that came from, but yesterday morning… something was going on.”

Worth noting: Reed’s tweet about the number has since been deleted.

Though we may now know there’s no official assigning of numbers yet, Schneider did reiterate the Seahawks’ desire to eventually land Clowney.

“We gave that a go several times,” Schneider said about Seattle’s pursuit to re-sign Clowney. “He’s in a position that he wasn’t ready to make a decision and that’s good, that’s fine. We gotta keep going and conducting business.”

Round and round we continue to go. Clowney has yet to receive an offer he wants and he’s not in any rush to commit. His contract demands have reportedly ranged from a high of $21 million per year down to a potential $13 million per year.

The Seahawks added more reason to speculate on their negotiations with Clowney, having cleared up some cap space by releasing guard D.J. Fluker and center Justin Britt this week, presumably to free up the capital to sign the highly-coveted pass rusher. Whether they’ll come to an agreement in the future, time will tell.
