This week’s Mariners Insider podcast/vodcast – your choice – provides a full two hours of baseball talk featuring conversations with former Mariners great and current special assistant, player development Mike Cameron, outfielder Braden Bishop, future reliever Joey Gerber (podcast only) and the one and only “Boy Howdy” James Osborn.
Mariners Podcast: Catching up with players and more during shutdown
The pod/vodcast kicks off with Howdy and I discussing the news of the week in baseball, the possibility of all 30 teams playing in Arizona. Obviously for that plan to be put into effect, a lot would have to happen. What we have heard of it so far is likely no more than a first look at a possibility. As Howdy talked about it though, my thoughts on the matter changed and I have now got some interesting points that I haven’t heard before to take into consideration. Blame Howdy.
Up next is Braden Bishop, who joined us from his home in Sacramento where he is staying home and staying safe right now. It was interesting to hear how he is using his down time, and it’s safe to say he has been incredibly productive in his time without baseball. He talks about the 4MOM foundation, which he created shortly after learning in 2014 that his mom was suffering from early onset Alzheimer’s disease. In the last year, he has taken the foundation to new heights and is poised to have even greater impact in the coming year.
Joey Gerber follows on the podcast only. I interviewed Gerber just hours before spring training was halted. I believe Gerber had an excellent chance of making the team, being the surprise addition to the bullpen at the end of spring as he had an eye-opening camp. It’s a fun, very lighthearted interview that ended up providing the best quote of the spring. It will be fun to get to know Gerber a little better when baseball resumes.
We got a sneak peek at the conversation with Cameron earlier this week as he broke down the trio of former outfielders who were assisting in camp this spring. How did he view Ichiro, Franklin Gutierrez as well as Ken Griffey Jr., as outfielders? The full interview includes his thoughts on the future stars he has worked with including Julio Rodriguez and Jarred Kelenic. Cameron also covers his time in the Mariners organization, what it was like to replace Griffey and be the young guy on the 2000 team that made it to the ALCS and goes in depth into why he thought the 2001 team that won 116 games came up short in the postseason.
