It’s known that the Seahawks have placed a high priority on re-signing free agent Jadeveon Clowney this offseason. Now there’s another team that appears to be just as serious about trying to woo the star defensive end its way.

Rost: 3 free agents who could be the Seahawks’ next signings

The Tennessee Titans posted a story on their official website Wednesday where both general manager Jon Robinson and head coach Mike Vrabel commented on their interest in Clowney. The comments came from conference calls with the two members of the Titans’ front office.

The story states that the Titans have had conversations with Clowney, though Robinson said nothing is imminent.

What makes the Titans formidable competition for the Seahawks is that Clowney played for Vrabel when both were with the Houston Texans. Vrabel was Houston’s linebackers coach from 2014 to 2016 and defensive coordinator in 2017.

“When I coached J.D., J.D. was prepared,” Vrabel said. “We did a lot with him and put him in a lot of different places to try and have him help us affect the game. And he played extremely hard. … We asked him to do a lot, and he did do a lot for us. I never had an issue with J.D.’s effort on the field.”

Location could also be a potential factor. The Titans play in Nashville, which is about a 6 1/2 hour drive from Clowney’s hometown of Rock Hill, S.C.

There are signs that Clowney could be nearing a decision on where he will continue his career. ESPN’s Diana Russini reported Wednesday morning that he has dropped his asking price to $17-18 million per year, a salary of at least $2 million less than he was previously seeking.

ESPN also identified the Seahawks and Titans as two teams known to still be interested in signing Clowney.

A three-time Pro Bowl selection, Clowney joined the Seahawks just prior to the 2019 regular season in a trade with the Texans. He was a standout on Seattle’s defense and was quoted by ESPN’s Josina Anderson after the season in saying that he would “definitely like to return” after seeing how the Seahawks operate but was “also open to new opportunities if it comes down to that.”
