Moore: Christmas lights add a little cheer amid coronavirus crisis

I’ll tell you the same thing I told my editors: This might be the craziest and corniest post I’ve ever written, but what the heck, I was inspired by a story I read about Farmington, N.H., a little town that decided to put up its Christmas lights in March amid the coronavirus crisis.

“It’s tough for everybody right now. Everyone’s on edge,” said Lee Warburtonpu, president of the Farmington Preservation and Improvement Organization, to Boston.com. “We just thought it would be nice to give the folks in town something to smile about.”
Farmington Chief of Police John Drury said: “Hopefully it gives people the sense of hope that we’re all in this together. We’ll get through it.”
I’ve always loved Christmas lights. I don’t have the best display in the neighborhood, but I enjoy putting them up every year. And there’s always a little bit of sadness when I take them down.
I really like what Farmington is doing, and it’s apparently started a hashtag on Twitter: #lightsforlife. It also prompted me to unbox some Christmas lights and decorate a little tree in our driveway.
There’s not as much traffic going by our house on Cougar Mountain since we were instructed to stay at home, but if you drive by and see the little lit-up Deodar Cedar tree in April, it’s there for the same reason that Farmington rekindled the holiday spirit in the springtime.
A Colorado woman is following suit with her decorations, saying: “In the midst of a lot of darkness, I thought we could all use some light.”
I’ll be honest, I walk out and look at my lit-up tree every night and feel sort of goofy about it, but I don’t care. I’m gonna keep plugging that cord in until the stay-at-home order is lifted and the worst of the coronavirus crisis is behind us.
