RENTON – Seahawks defensive tackle Jesse Williams is set for kidney surgery after recently being diagnosed with papillary type 2 cancer.
The team announced that diagnosis last week. Coach Pete Carroll provided an update on Williams on Tuesday, saying his surgery is scheduled for Thursday.
“His attitude is good,” Carroll said. “It’s been a hard couple of weeks since he got the news, but now that it’s coming to game time, he’s ready to go.”
Williams was present but did not participate as the Seahawks held their first Organized Team Activity on Tuesday. Carroll said he had just spoken with Williams before he met with the media.
“He talked about bouncing back quickly and getting back on his feet and going again,” Carroll said. “I wouldn’t expect anything less from Jesse. He’s a battler all the way and he’s been up against it, too. He’s fought some difficult fights and he’s fighting another one, maybe the fight of a young man’s life. So we’ll be there with him and hope to pull him through.”
