While we wait for the free agency period to open, the Seahawks have made some moves, but with the team’s staff, most notably adding 2020 Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee Steve Hutchinson, one of the best offensive linemen in franchise history.

The Seahawks announced Wednesday that Hutchinson, who was a first-round pick by Seattle in 2001 and played for the team until 2005, will be joining the front office as a full-time football consultant.

Hutchinson isn’t the only former Seahawks first-round pick involved in the changes, as 2008 first-round pick Aaron Curry, a former lineacker, is now a full-time defensive assistant. He spent 2019 assisting the team’s linebackers.

Quarterbacks coach Dave Canales is now the team’s passing game coordinator, and taking his place as quarterbacks coach is Austin Davis, who served as an assistant to Canales in 2019. Davis was star quarterback Russell Wilson’s backup in 2017 and he retired after a seven-year career in 2018. Davis, 30, is the youngest quarterbacks coach in the NFL.

Brennan Carroll, son of head coach Pete Carroll, now holds the role of run game coordinator. In 2019, he was an offensive scheme coordinator and assistant offensive line coach.

Nick Sorensen, the team’s secondary coach, has added the role of nickel specialist to his duties.

The Seahawks also added three new faces to the coaching staff in Sanjay Lal as a senior offensive assistant, Damione Lewis as a defensive assistant and Keli’i Kekuewa, also as an offensive assistant.

Lal, a University of Washington alum, replaces Steve Shimko on the coaching staff. Shimko left the Seahawks to become the tight ends coach at Boston College.

Lal coached for the Dallas Cowboys in 2018 and 2019 as the receivers coach and has also coached with the New York Jets, Buffalo Bills, Indianapolis Colts and Oakland Raiders.

Lewis is a former defensive end who was a first-round pick out of the University of Miami. He most recently was an assistant athletic director at Florida International University and, per the team’s announcement, was a member of the Seahawks’ coaching staff in 2017 as part of the NFL’s Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship.

Kekuewa spent the 2019 season at the collegiate ranks at Notre Dame as a defensive graduate assistant.

Jethro Franklin, who was the Seahawks’ assistant defensive line coach the last two years, will not return to Seattle for 2020.
