Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman has won the Pro Football Writers of America’s “Good Guy Award,” which is given annually to the NFL player “for his qualities and professional style in helping pro football writers do their jobs.”

Sherman is the second straight Seahawk to win the award, following quarterback Russell Wilson, and he’s a worthy recipient.

This honor may be a surprise to some who watch Sherman from afar and know him best for a few Twitter spats, his on-field trash talking and a couple of unbecoming interviews. But there’s a much different side of Sherman, and those who cover him on a daily basis would agree that it’s a pleasure to do so.

He’s gracious and accommodating, going beyond his league-mandated media requirements by holding a press conference each Wednesday during the season and also making himself available to reporters throughout the rest of the week. On Sundays, he answers questions even when the giant crowds linger around his locker long after games. His responses are rarely cliché, usually thoughtful and often humorous. And he isn’t afraid to express a controversial opinion.

What more could a reporter ask for?

This one may not end up in the front of Sherman’s trophy case, but it’s a nice and well-deserved honor nonetheless.
