Groz: What the WSU win over UW Huskies proves about college hoops
Feb 10, 2020, 1:30 PM
The WSU Cougars may not be in the NCAA Tournament mix, but they’ve been having an enjoyable run in Pac-12 play. The rival UW Huskies, though – well, their season has been heading the opposite direction.
Elleby scores career-high 34, WSU knocks off UW Huskies 79-67
That came to a head on Sunday in Pullman when WSU knocked off the talented but scuffling Huskies 79-67 thanks to a career-high 34 points from CJ Elleby. The win moved the Cougs to 14-10 and 5-6 in conference play in head coach Kyle Smith’s season, while Washington suffered its sixth straight loss and eight in its last nine games.
The Huskies’ season began with a 67-64 win over Baylor, which to date is the only loss pinned on the Bears, who currently hold the No. 1 ranking in both the Associated Press and Coaches polls. But it’s been all downhill since UW started the campaign with a 10-2 record, as they now sit 12-12 and in last place in the entire Pac-12.
While UW’s season has fallen apart, WSU has found some surprising success. Sure, the Cougars either need an incredible run down the stretch or to simply win the Pac-12 Tournament to make the field of 68 in March, but there are other postseason invitations they could receive that would be a feather in Smith’s cap in his first season in Pullman.
Dave “The Groz” Grosby shares his thoughts on WSU, UW and the college basketball season in his latest Just A Minute segment, which you hear in the player at the top of this story.
