The Kansas City Chiefs are champions for the first time in 50 years after mounting a late fourth-quarter comeback against the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl 54 on Sunday.

Star quarterback Patrick Mahomes took home the game’s MVP after throwing for 286 yards, two fourth quarter touchdowns and rushing for a score earlier in the game to help give Kansas City the 31-20 win. Running back Damian Williams also played a key role for the Chiefs, as he had over 130 yards of total offense and scored twice in the final 2:44 of the game.
With the big game in the rearview mirror and the 2019 NFL season officially at an end, 710 ESPN Seattle’s Dave “The Groz” Grosby reflects on this year’s Super Bowl and how the 49ers, who were in control for most of the game, let the game slip away during the second half of the fourth quarter.
San Francisco had a 20-10 lead up until the 6:13 mark of the fourth quarter, and after a Raheem Mostert touchdown with 2:35 left in the third quarter, quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and the 49ers offense went ice cold, failing to score the rest of the way.

For 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, who calls San Francisco’s offensive plays, it was likely a case of deja vu, as he was the offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl 51 when they blew a 28-3 lead to the New England Patriots. Like with that game three years ago, his play calling and decision making late in the game has been heavily scrutinized.
“San Francisco left the door open and the Chiefs made plays when they had to, but this still goes down as a choke to me,” Grosby said. “The Niners didn’t play perfect, and Shanahan coached a strange game at times, but don’t tell me you didn’t think they had it won with that 10-point lead halfway through the fourth quarter?”
