RENTON – It sure seemed like Aaron Rodgers was tweaking Russell Wilson when he said after Sunday’s win over the Seahawks that “God was a Packers fan tonight.”
Wilson, who seems fundamentally incapable of saying anything inflammatory, predictably took the high road when asked about Rodgers’ comment on Thursday. Though if you read his response closely enough, you might find an ever-so-subtle jab back.
“I think that in terms of that comment and all that, everybody has the right to their own opinion,” Wilson said. “I know for me, I’m just grateful that God has given me the opportunity to play the great game of football. I’m so grateful.
“I know one of the things my parents always taught me was just to continue to remain humble in your victories and your losses. I think that’s just the thing that I’m grateful for, just to be able to play the game of football. I love it. Like I said, everybody is entitled to their own opinion.”
As this ESPN.com story by Rob Demovsky notes, there’s some history with Rodgers, Wilson and comments about God. As is typical of many players after victories or individual achievements, Wilson credited God with helping the Seahawks pull of an improbable comeback over Green Bay in the NFC Championship Game last season. Rodgers said a few days later that he doesn’t think God cares about the outcomes of football games, which made his comment after Sunday’s win over Seattle seem like a shot at Wilson.
As if future meetings between Seattle and Green Bay needed any more intrigue.
