We have the first Mariner moves of the new year.

On Thursday morning the Mariners announced they had released Anthony Bass, who was acquired in the deal for Leonys Martin, from his contract to pursue options in Japan. Then Thursday afternoon the team announced they had signed right-hander Ryan Cook to a one year deal reported to be worth $1.1 million.

“We’re looking forward to seeing Ryan in a Mariners uniform,” said general manager Jerry Dipoto in a press release. “He remains just 28 years old and is just one season removed from being one of the more effective setup relievers in the American League. His presence enhances both our bullpen depth and overall upside.”

Cook, who was drafted by the Diamondbacks in 2008, has pitched in the MLB for Arizona, Oakland and Boston. He put up his best numbers in 2012 when he was an All-Star with the A’s. His 2.60 ERA with 197 strikeouts in 190 2/3 innings pitched from 2011-2014 was good for eighth best by an American League reliever with 190 or more innings in that timespan.

After missing time with both a shoulder injury and lat strain in 2014, Cook spent the majority of 2015 in minors for both Oakland and Boston and put up a 3.38 ERA in 42 2/3 innings.

With today’s moves the 40-man roster remains full.
