Wyman’s Football 101: Defending Seahawks DE Clowney’s hit vs Eagles

Jan 7, 2020, 2:06 PM

Seahawks defensive end Jadeveon Clowney has received a lot of attention – much of it negative – for his hit on Carson Wentz that presumably gave the Eagles quarterback the concussion that knocked him from last Sunday’s playoff game.

Seahawks’ K.J. Wright: There’s been ‘no mess, no drama’ in ‘very fun year’

Seattle went on to win the game 17-9 with Wentz on the sideline, leaving 40-year-old backup Josh McCown to lead the Philadelphia offense. Clowney, meanwhile, had a stellar performance with five tackles (all solo) and a sack. And while Seahawks coach Pete Carroll gave Clowney a lot of credit for his role in Seattle keeping Philadelphia out of the end zone completely, all anybody else wants to talk about is the hit on Wentz.

Dave Wyman has thoughts on the play, too, which the former NFL linebacker and current Seahawks Radio Network color analyst shares in his latest Football 101 video for 710Sports.com.

Wyman makes a number of key points about Clowney, who he said is being made out to be a villain simply for making a “football play.” He also points out that the Eagles probably learned on the play why you don’t assign a tight end to block Clowney, a former No. 1 overall draft pick. And then there’s the fact that Wentz stayed in the game for five more plays after Clowney tackled him, and he did some things that concussed players don’t normally do in those five plays.

Check out the video embedded in this post or watch it at this link.

Wyman will be back on the call with play-by-play man Steve Raible on the 710 ESPN Seattle and KIRO Radio 97.3 FM broadcast of the Seahawks’ upcoming second-round playoff game in Green Bay against the Packers, which is set for a 3:40 p.m. kickoff next Sunday. Coverage will begin with the pregame show at 12:30 p.m. Sunday.
