A day after the Seahawks 30-24 victory over the Carolina Panthers they were hit with some bad news: wide receiver Josh Gordon failed a drug test and was suspended indefinitely.

Seahawks’ Russell Wilson can break another passing record Sunday

Gordon had just seven catches in five games with the Seahawks, but Seattle was 4-1 with him on the field and a good percentage of those catches were third down conversions. He’d mostly been used on short routes like slants, but the Seahawks sent him deep on Sunday and he came down with an incredible 58-yard diving catch.

The man who threw him the ball, Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, told reporters Thursday that he and Gordon grew close during his brief time in Seattle and is praying for him.

“You’re going to miss him, obviously as a player but more importantly as a friend, as a guy you kind of bonded with pretty quickly,” Wilson said. “So, we’ve been staying in touch and all that (and I’m) praying for him. I really believe that prayer works. I really believe that relationships and friendships work and supporting (friends) no matter what we go through. We all have stuff and things we go through, so I’m just praying for him and rooting for him and he’ll overcome. He’s an overcomer and I really believe that.”

Gordon started the season with the New England Patriots but was placed on waivers after initially being placed on injured reserve. Seattle claimed him and after missing Week 9 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Godon made his Seattle debut against the San Francisco 49ers.

This was the eighth time Gordon has been suspended by either the NFL or his team. He was suspended for the last three games of last season while in New England and also missed the entire 2015 and 2016 seasons because of suspension.

The Seahawks took a chance on Gordon, who was an All-Pro in 2013 when he played for the Cleveland Browns, that ultimately didn’t work out for the 2019 season and playoff run. Gordon’s contract is over after the season, and if he is reinstated, he would be an unrestricted free agent, free to sign with any team.

Despite that, Wilson wouldn’t mind he and Gordon teaming up again.

“Hopefully he’ll get another chance to play with us because he was fun to play with,” Wilson said. “He was great. He got along with the guys great. He’s a great worker. He had all those attributes in terms of trying to be great and practicing and being able to play and guys really bonded with him and really liked him. I know I did and so did everyone else, too. We feel for him. We’re just praying for him.”

On Monday, shortly after it was announced Gordon was suspended, head coach Pete Carroll said he felt the locker room environment had been good for him. Wilson echoed that sentiment.

“I think that he really fit in in terms of just the everyday part of the process and since day one when he got here, he was studying and working and highlighting and doing all the extra work,” Wilson said.

Wilson said he and Gordon had a conversation that leads him to believe that if Gordon is reinstated, he could return to the Seahawks.

“He said, ‘This is the place I want to be and the place that has helped change my life a little bit and I’m getting better,’” Wilson recalled Gordon saying. “You hope that he can come back to us and play with us, but more importantly it’s about him, it’s about his soul, his life, it’s about all the things that we all have to go through and overcome.”

Since tight end Will Dissly tore his Achilles tendon in Week 6, the Seahawks have been looking for a third option for Wilson behind receivers Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf.

Gordon and tight end Jacob Hollister have been that to an extent, but with Gordon suspended, other receivers will have to step up. Wilson has full confidence in the other Seahawks receivers.

“Obviously missing Josh is always tough because he’s such a great player. You want to have him on the field,” Wilson said of replacing Gordon. “We also won a lot of football games, found a way to win a lot of football games before (he joined the team). He just added even that much more to the room. I think that our guys are ready to roll. They’re excited to play. David Moore is going to step up. Malik (Turner) is going to step up. (Jaron Brown) is going to step up and get back in the game a lot more. It’s going to be a good thing for us. Those guys have played great. I have all the trust in the world in our receiving room. That room is unbelievable. It’s been cool to be with those guys.”
