Heaps’ Chalk Talk: Tyler Lockett gets re-established in Seahawks’ offense

Dec 19, 2019, 12:33 PM | Updated: 12:51 pm

The Seattle Seahawks had something in their Week 15 win over the Carolina Panthers that had been missing for over a month – the Russell Wilson-Tyler Lockett connection.

If Seahawks have 2 Pro Bowlers to Ravens’ 12, shouldn’t Wilson be MVP?

Lockett is unquestionably the Seahawks’ top wide receiver, but he hadn’t played like it since Week 9, when he caught 13 passes for 152 yards – both career-highs – in an overtime win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The next week he was limited to just 26 yards on three receptions by the San Francisco 49ers, and he suffered a leg injury along the way that landed him in the hospital for two nights.

While Lockett didn’t miss any additional time, he certainly wasn’t 100% when Seattle returned from a Week 11 bye. Not only was he hampered by the leg injury, but he was dealing with an illness. So fast forward to Week 15, and Lockett had just eight catches for 107 yards over his previous four games, including no receptions whatsoever in a Week 13 win over Minnesota.

In Charlotte, however, Lockett was back to 100% and was as big a part of Seattle’s 30-24 victory as anybody. He hauled in eight catches on nine targets for 120 yards and a touchdown, contributing to a strong day for Wilson, who had a 137.7 passer rating, completing 20 of 26 attempts (76.9%) for 286 yards, two TDs and no interceptions.

In this week’s Chalk Talk with Jake Heaps, the former Seahawks QB and current co-host of 710 ESPN Seattle’s Tom, Jake and Stacy breaks down three of the biggest catches Lockett made last Sunday. Those plays are:

• Lockett’s 44-yard catch in the first quarter (watch here)
• Lockett’s TD reception in the second quarter (watch here)
• Lockett’s third-and-long catch that helped Seattle run out the clock in the fourth quarter (watch here)

The Seahawks are back in action this Sunday with a 1:25 p.m. game with the Arizona Cardinals on 710 ESPN Seattle and KIRO Radio 97.3 FM.
