Wyman’s Football 101: Seahawks LBs show their value in defending the pass
Dec 17, 2019, 3:57 PM
The Seahawks’ 30-24 win over the Carolina Panthers was a big day for veteran linebackers Bobby Wagner and K.J. Wright.
Rost: With Hawks’ defense thin, Wagner and Wright take charge
Wagner, a four-time All-Pro, made an interception late in the second quarter that prevented Carolina from eating into a 13-point Seattle lead before halftime. Then in the third quarter it was Wright who stepped up with picks on back-to-back Panthers possessions, giving him a new single-season career-high total of three.
They weren’t the only Seahawks linebackers who were strong in coverage in Week 15, however.
Rookie Cody Barton continued to play in place of the injured Mychal Kendricks, and he had a pair of opportunities to make interceptions of his own. And while Barton didn’t hang on to either of them, his instincts in coverage turned out to be valuable in a game that was decided by just six points.
In this week’s Football 101 video breakdown, Seahawks Radio Network color commentator and former NFL linebacker Dave Wyman takes a close look at Barton’s day in Charlotte.
The Seahawks (11-3) will be back in action this Sunday, Dec. 22, in a 1:25 p.m. home contest against the Arizona Cardinals (4-9-1). Wyman will be on the call with play-by-play announcer Steve Raible on 710 ESPN Seattle and KIRO Radio 97.3 FM.
