Chris Petersen’s finale as UW Huskies head coach is likely to be an emotional one.

WSU headed to Cheez-It Bowl to take on Air Force

That’s because the Huskies will play Petersen’s old team, the Boise State Broncos, in the Las Vegas Bowl on Saturday, Dec. 21.

The announcement of the bowl pairing was made Sunday afternoon, just six days after the news that Petersen would resign as Washington’s head football coach following the team’s bowl game. Petersen has led the Huskies football program since 2014, when he arrived in Montlake after eight years as the head coach at Boise. Current UW defensive coordinator Jimmy Lake will take over the reins as Huskies head coach in 2020.

Washington goes into the Las Vegas Bowl with a 7-5 overall record. The Huskies finished 4-5 in PAC-12 conference play.

The Broncos are the Mountain West champions, going 12-1 in the regular season with an 8-0 record in conference action. They are ranked 19th in both the Associated Press and Coaches polls.

Boise State is led by coach Bryan Harsin, who has held the position since Petersen moved from the Broncos to the Huskies. He was previously Petersen’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 2006-10, and returned to Boise in 2014 to take the head coaching job.

The Huskies and Broncos have split their four meetings with each team winning two games apiece. Boise State won the lone matchup against a Petersen-coached Washington team, 16-13 in Boise on Sept. 4, 2015.

The Las Vegas Bowl will be played at Sam Boyd Stadium in Whitney, Nevada. It will have a kickoff time of 4:30 p.m. and television coverage will air on ABC.
