The Seahawks have added depth at tight end in time for their Week 12 game against the Eagles. It’s just not the depth that was expected.
6 Seahawks who should make more of an impact during the final stretch
Ed Dickson, who was activated from the injured reserve list Wednesday, was placed back on IR Friday after he listed on Thursday’s practice report as a non-participant.
To take Dickson’s place on the active roster, Seattle promoted tight end Tyrone Swoopes from the practice squad.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler tweeted Thursday night that the Seahawks were expected to place Dickson back on IR. When the move became official Friday, it effectively ended any chance of Dickson playing this year.
Dickson will end up having missed the entire season after undergoing knee surgery in August, which resulted in Seattle beginning its season with the veteran tight end on IR. Dickson was eligible to return from IR after Week 8, but the Seahawks opted to wait until this week to activate him. If Seattle had not activated him by this week, he would have been ineligible to return at all this season.
The 32-year-old Dickson also missed the first six games of 2018, his first year with the Seahawks, due to a non-football injury. He eventually played in 10 games for Seattle, making 12 catches for 143 yards and three touchdowns.
Swoopes, who turned 25 earlier this month, has played two games in his NFL career, one each in 2017 and 2018 with the Seahawks. The University of Texas product has one career catch for 23 yards. He is listed as 6 foot 4 and 254 pounds.
Seattle’s only other healthy tight end besides Swoopes is Jacob Hollister. Luke Willson suffered a hamstring injury in the Seahawks’ Nov. 11 game against San Francisco and has not practiced this week, and Will Dissly is out for the season following surgery to repair a ruptured Achilles.
Seahawks DE Jadeveon Clowney hurt
Besides the development with Dickson, the biggest news from Seattle’s injury report is regarding Jadeveon Clowney, the star defensive end who is coming off a dominant performance against the 49ers. Clowney did not practice for the second straight day Thursday with what the team specified as a knee/hip injury.
Defensive tackle Jarran Reed sat out practice Thursday with a ankle/groin injury designation after being a limited practice participant on Wednesday. Also out Thursday was cornerback Neiko Thorpe (groin).
Limited on Thursday were WR Tyler Lockett (shin), DE Quinton Jefferson (hip/ankle), G Mike Iupati (non-injury related/foot), LB K.J. Wright (shoulder), T Duane Brown (knee/biceps) and T George Fant (knee). Brown status is an improvement after he was out Wednesday.
