Seahawks 2017 second-round pick Malik McDowell was sentenced to 11 months in jail and three years of probation on Wednesday, according to a story from ESPN.com’s Brady Henderson.

McDowell was Seattle’s first selection in the 2017 draft with the 35th pick overall, but the former defensive tackle from Michigan State never played a snap for the team.

In July 2017, McDowell was involved in an ATV accident and injured his head. He spent the 2017 and 2018 seasons on the team’s non-football injury list and was waived with a non-injury designation in July of 2018.

McDowell has had multiple run-ins with the law over the last few years. He was put on probation for 12 months for a DUI in 2017, and later that year he was arrested for disorderly conduct at an Atlanta nightclub.

His sentencing Wednesday was the result of a February incident where McDowell was charged with assault, resisting arrest and operating a vehicle while intoxicated. This was after an incident where he fought two officers after a DUI stop, Henderson reports.

In April, McDowell was found to be in possession of a stolen Ford F-150 Raptor, which led to him being charged with receiving and concealing stolen property.

According to Henderson, McDowell was sentenced to 153 days in jail for the February incident with officers and his second drunken driving offense, with credit for 66 days served. He also received 244 days in jail for the stolen property offense.

In addition to the 11 months in jail, McDowell must also write four essays during the next 90 days, ranging from 750 to 1,000 words. The topics are finding meaning in life other than committing crimes, the importance of respecting the rule of law, the principles of the Declaration of Independence and how his behavior undermined them and the importance of respecting property rights, Henderson reports.

In May, the Seahawks sued McDowell, seeking repayment of roughly $800,000 in signing bonus money.
